Don't Wait! Get Your NYCC 2013 Tickets Now!

Blame it on the insanely popular but sold-out San Diego Comic-Con, some say.

But if you have missed out on those SDCC passes and really need your geek fix this year, Red Dot Diva advises you to hurry and get your NYCC 2013 tickets now!

3-Day tickets for NYCC 2013, priced at USD 65, went on sale yesterday May 15th, and the official word out from organizer Reed Exhibitions is that over 50% of these tickets have ready been sold! While it is not selling in a geek-frenzy like SDCC, it is still moving out steadily and fast. In fact, Special Access VIP (4-Day) tickets, which were released for sale in March, have already been sold out.

Red Dot Diva's convention roomie-pal @eserei27 was online yesterday morning to buy the 3-Day tickets and said that there was a virtual waiting room like SDCC's booking portal, but there did not appear to be any server issues. She managed to finish her transaction in 10 minutes with no problems at all!

Shakespeare in the Park 2013: Director Bruce Guthrie Shares about the Staging of "Othello"

The historical Fort Canning Park, with its colonial buildings and landmarks, has always been a magical setting for a good Shakespearean play.

This year, the Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) has continued its yearly tradition of producing Shakespeare in the Park. And this time, the chosen play is the dark, jealousy-fueled tragedy called "Othello".

With a cast consisting of British actor Daniel Francis as main protagonist Othello, and local-based thespians like Daniel Jenkins and Wendy Kweh, the updated version of the play kicked off its run on 24th April. Apparently, it has already been watched by an audience of over 25,000.

Red Dot Diva has already seen the play, and she cannot deny that the staging was indeed very grand and elaborate. But what she enjoyed most from the play was Daniel Jenkins' portrayal of Iago. The actor had given a wonderfully nuanced performance of a villain without a shred of remorse, which made him even more evil than she ever thought possible.

Director Bruce Guthrie returned to the Red Dot Island this year for the epic production of "Othello". He had also helmed the previous year's light-hearted romantic comedy "Twelfth Night" - which boasted of a gorgeous set that consisted of a beach, a mansion, a swimming pool and a visual projection of an ocean view.

Red Dot Diva got hold of Bruce Guthrie to share more about himself, and what went on behind the staging of "Othello".

FCBD 2013: The Day When Diva Grabbed Free Comics (and Iron Man)

This is the third FCBD year that Red Dot Diva nerded out and went store-hopping for free comics.

There were plans to meet super early for breakfast with pals, but she forgot to charge her batts after the previous night's epic geek showdown with writer Adam Glass. And so, morning kopi was downed at home while rushing around getting her things ready for a day of free comic book shopping.

Having learned their tough lesson from last year, Red Dot Diva, Melvin, Alvin from Here Be Geeks and Sarah, made sure that Kinokuniya mainstore was their very first FCBD stop, before all the packs of free comics ran out.

FCBD 2013: Writer Adam Glass Vs The Local Geekdom!

It Was An Epic Friday Geek Smackdown at Kinokuniya this past Friday, 3 May! *HRumPf!*

The Adam Glass versus Red Dot Island Fans Showdown (otherwise known as "Meet The Writer") began promptly at 7.30pm. The event was an early celebration for this year's Free Comic Book Day (FCBD), and it certainly set the mood right for the next day's festivities.

Accompanied by his beautiful wife Mia, Adam Glass - writer of CW's cult TV series "Supernatural" and a few comic titles, including DC's New 52 "Suicide Squad" - bravely took his position at Kinokuniya's Crossroads to face his fans.

One has to wonder: if "Supernatural" is already considered a cult series State-side, how "big" would the audience in tiny Red Dot Island be?

Before the event, Red Dot Diva tested for fans response on Twitter, but there was only a trickle of tweets from local folks mentioning about Adam Glass' session. So, it was thougt that ... probablyyyyyyyyy..... maybeeee.. only a handful of fans of the series might turn up at Kinokuniya. On a Friday night, no less.

A Spooky Q&A With Dave Chua - Writer of "The Girl Under The Bed"

Local readers may already be familiar with Dave Chua's award-winning novella "Gone Case" which was adapted into two graphic novels recently. The graphic novels - which depicted a boy's coming of age story in the very heartlands of the  HDB landscape - were a collaboration with artist Koh Hong Teng.

Both books were well-received by local readers mainly because it spoke right to the heart of the true-blue Red Dot Islander. Even more so when the books were visualized by Hong Teng, whose amazing artwork were so detailed and vivid.

This time round, in Epigram's graphic novel "The Girl Under The Bed" (with young artist Xiao Yan), Dave Chua turns to another favourite genre of his - horror. Despite being set during the Hungry Ghost Festival or "7th month" (in Hokkien), the story is also another realistic, coming-of-age tale of a teenage girl.

Red Dot Diva lays out some glittery offerings so that Dave will reveal what lies behind the spooky tale.
