The Comic Embassy - Get To Know Clio Hui, Clio Ding and Rixou Low (15 - 30 August 2022)

For the last 3 months, pop-up art community space The Comic Embassy held an array of activities to help raise the profile of our island’s local comic book scene.

From 15 to 30 August, the headlining theme will be Realms Of Allures, and artist ambassadors CLIO HUI, CLIO DING and RIXOU LOW (Liu JiaHui) are poised to share their art and experiences about comic book creation in the local marketplace. The trio have each published original books set in an alluring and imaginative fantasy world filled with cyborgs, demons, dinosaurs, fallen angels and vampires.

To find out more information about the events scheduled from 15 to 30 August 2022, check out the link here: https://sgcartoonhub.com/comic-embassy/#programme-2

Here’s an introduction to the three artist ambassadors for the last fortnight of The Comic Embassy:

CLIO DING

Clio Ding is an educator who is also a comics nerd. She has drawn cartoon strips for Singapore Press Holdings’ Lian He Zao Bao and Friday Weekly, and has been indulging in her passion for making comics. You can find her work featured in anthologies including Arena Fantasy Vol.0 (2009), Our Months Together (2015), Mount A Rescue (2020) and Booze Ha Ha (2021).

Currently, Clio has two on-going original titles, Kev!n and Libera Nos A Malo. Kev!n is an alcoholic dinosaur whose various facets of his daily life is a humourous and incisive take of the world we live in. Libera Nos A Malo, on the other hand, is a gothic tale that follows Father Iganatus, a retired cyborg exorcist (yes! they do exist!) who solves tricky paranormal cases together with this overqualified assistant Brother Contine. Both titles are serialised online via Pura Comixmag and Webtoon. Clio is also writes and edits for SG Cartoon Resource Hub, a one-stop website on Singapore comics culture.

Clio Ding will be doing a live drawing on 20 August (Sat) from 2 – 3 PM, and conducting a workshop on Comics Panelling: From Scripts To Pages on 21 August (Sun) from 2 – 330 PM at The Comic Embassy.

CLIO HUI

Clio Hui loves anime and manga since she was teenager. She is a self-taught artist but that did not deter her from leaning into her passion and creating her own comics. When free online comic magazine PuraComixmag by local comics studio TCZ called for submissions from the general public in 2014, Clio submitted two short stories. One of them was selected, and this was A Deal With Lucifer, a tale about angels and demons. What is interesting is that Lucifer manifests in a female form in A Deal With Lucifer, which is now a popular on-going manga series with already 4 full volumes produced. In addition, she has also released two commemorative A Deal With Lucifer illustration books.

Her other creative works include Time Destination: SG50 (featured in SG50 comic anthology Our Months Together, 2015), Happy Meal (featured in a compilation of one-page horror manga "亞洲漫畫家恐怖驚悚漫畫一頁挑戰", 2020), Rebirth and Shadow (graphic music videos ft. A Deal With Lucifer with music band Pretty Scar, 2020), and The Artist’s Struggles (featured in Our World, a comic anthology by SG Cartoon Resource Hub, 2022). Due to her passion for creating comics, Clio has been featured in interviews by Lianhe Zaobao and The Straits Times.

Join Clio Hui for a fireside chat moderated by CT Lim on 20 August (Sat) at 3 – 4 PM at The Comic Embassy. She will also be doing a live drawing on 27 August (Sat) at 2 – 3 PM.

RIXOU LOW (LIU JIAHUI)

Rixou Low (aka Liu Jiahui) began her career as an architect, where she practiced in the exhibition, commercial and public building industry for a few years. During that time, she was also moonlighting as a freelance illustrator drawing for books and book covers for authors as well as publishing companies. After some soul searching, she decided to take a leap, and follow her passion by creating comic books full time.

Her debut work won her a place at the National Art Council’s The Apprenticeship Programme during Noise Singapore 2012. Under the mentonship of Eisner Award-winning writer-artist Sonny Liew, Rixou produced a short science fiction comic entitled Kestrel:Snow. Rixou’s follow up project Ti Amo was then published in online comic platform PuraComixmag.

For Pandora’s Scar, Rixou created a rich fantasy coming of age story based on Greek mythology. The twist is that the boy-meets-girl and adventure tale featuring godly beings and magical creatures is set in a modern world called Sentinel City. Pandora’s Scar - Sentinel City garnered the Bronze Award of Excellence at the 2nd China- Wuhan 2012 International Digital Arts Convention.

Rixou Lou will be doing a live drawing on 21 August (Sun) at 3:30 – 4:30 PM.

The Comic Embassy was set as an experiment to promote local comic books to the general public, and to provide opportunities for established as well as emerging talents to share their experiences in comic book-making. During its tenure at Tekka, Red Dot Diva thought the initiative managed to attract more people than she expected. She also enjoyed getting to know more local artists and connecting with fellow comic book fans at the creative space.

Considering our how small our local market is, our talents have published an impressive number of comics so far, and they are not stopping any time soon. So, do look out for another iteration of The Comic Embassy in the near future by checking out announcements at the SG Cartoon Resource Hub website!
