Singapore Comic Convention 2021 Opens For Registration, And It's Free!

After having to cancel the event last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Singapore Comic Convention (SGCC) is back with an online format that will run from 3 December 2021 to 3 January 2022. The convention is still part of the Singapore Media Festival hosted by hosted by the Infocomm Media Development Authority.

Registration for SGCC 2021 Online is open right now on their website at www.singaporecomiccon.com, and it is free!

For everyone who signs up for SGCC 2021, you will automatically be entered into a lucky draw, with the chance to nab shopping vouchers, audio headsets, hotel stays and more. The winners will be announced during SGCC 2021. In addition, you will have access to 1-month of Animax + GEM on meWATCH for FREE!

WHAT'S GONNA BE HAPPENING AT SGCC 2021

Truth be told, details are scarce at the moment. But there is some information to be gleaned from the FAQ released by the organisers.

There will be an online SGCC E-Mall available on Shopee during the month where you can buy the exhibitors' merchandise. However, do note that these items can only be delivered to local addresses. There will also be convention goodie bags and exclusives available for purchase in due course.

Other than that, SGCC 2021 has announced the Asia Esports Festival (see below). As for guests, exhibitors and panels, these are still a mystery. Nothing has been announced yet.

If you do not already know, Reed Exhibitions had licensed SGCC to a new event company called Generation Experience earlier this year. Red Dot Diva learned from the grapevine that some familiar folks from the previous team will also be involved in this year's event. Is this good or bad? You decide.

ASIA ESPORTS FESTIVAL

Through their partnership with Esports Entertainment Asia (EEA), SGCC Online will be co-hosting the Asia Esports Festival (AEF). The esports event will be held online and live streaming via SGCC Online's virtual stage across the 5 weekends during the convention. There will be tournaments for 6 games - Dota 2, Valorant, Call of Duty Mobile, Mobile Legends Bang Bang, Pokemon Unite and Counter Strike: Global Offensive.

The grand finals battle to crown the winner for all the games will go down live at EXP - Singapore’s largest Esports Center, located at Kallang Wave Mall.

Red Dot Diva probably speaks for most here by saying that she misses the in-person camaraderie of the local geek community. It has been ages since she met many of the people she knows, even though interacting with them via social media is better than nothing. SGCC 2019 event was one of the coziest, better organised and most varied iteration of the local pop-culture convention. So hopefully, Generation Experience is able to craft a way to bring the fun and interesting aspects of that show in the virtual space. It is not always easy to get an audience as engaged in a virtual show vs a live in-person event. Red Dot Diva is hoping for the best though!
