Singapore Comic Convention 2021 Guests Include Lee Bermejo, Martin Simmonds and Cheah Sinann
Do you realise, that Singapore Comic Convention (SGCC) starts this Friday, 3 December 2021? For an event that attracted over 50,000 attendees in 2019, this year's event is very low key. There are a few possible reasons for this. The convention has been taken over from Reed Exhibitions Singapore by a new event company called Generation Experience, and the show will run only on a virtual format. Generally, people are getting weary of staring at a screen after more than a year of Zoom and Google meetings. It is just not the same as an in-person gathering where connections and conversations happen in real time. And Red Dot Diva is sure that most of us sorely miss our annual geek huddle.
But still, the show must go on. At least something is happening, right? There have already been a few guests announced for the online panels, so if you are a huge fan of any of them, do remember to register for SGCC. Registration is FREE!!
GUESTS ANNOUNCED SO FAR (30 Nov 2021):
LEE BERMEJO
Award-winning comic book writer/ artist Lee Bermejo of Batman and Suiciders fame, will join CT Lim for an online chat. His other notable works can be seen in Vertigo's Hellblazer (33 covers!), and collaborations with writer Brian Azzarello - the Joker graphic novel and the Lex Luthor: Man of Steel limited series.
MARTIN SIMMONDS
Martin Simmonds is an artist and co-creator of comic book titles The Department Of Truth (with James Tynion), Punks Not Dead (with David M Barnett), Dying Is Easy (with Joe Hill) and Friendo (with Alex Paknadel). He has also drawn covers for various projects, including Marvel's Jessica Jones, Titan Comics' Robotech and Image Comics' Paradiso.
CHEAH SINANN
Chean Sinann is a local veteran creator who is well-known for the comic strip The House Of Lim, a daily cartoon that was published in The Straits Times for eight years. His other cartoon strip Billy & Saltie promotes about a greener environment and can be found in The Borneo Bulletin in Brunei, and in The Daily Frontier in Bangladesh. He is also the author of World War 2 graphic novel entitled The Bicycle.
Look out for a special chat featuring Cheah Sinann with comic book fan Winston Goh during SGCC.
WERTHER DELL'EDERA
Italian artist Werther Dell'Edera is the artist of BOOM! Studios' relevant and haunting limited comic book series Something Is Killing The Children (written by James Tynion IV). He has also drawn for DC Comics' western comic book series Loveless and Marvel's Amazing Spider-man: Family Business.
THE WOKE SALARYMAN
If you are interested in local financial matters, The Woke Salaryman webcomic breaks things down into easily digestible facts and opinions. The co-founders of The Woke Salaryman will be appearing in a live session during the event, so you can register for a spot to chat with them and ask them questions about your finances.
Other guests listed to-date include CongMing, ForMyths, Jinx88, Likrot and Yvotoro, creators who are part of Japanese collab store Kiru Made.
More intriguingly, there is a guest listed who is called Gotham (高谭). Red Dot Diva discovered that this mysterious artist is the creator of a locally-influenced Chinese manga called SAMSUI SWORD (女侠红头巾) about a samsui woman who battles supernatural beings like the orang minyak.
There are more guests to be announced as the start of the convention draws near. So look out for the news on Singapore Comic Convention (SGCC)'s Facebook page and digital newsletters!
Again, remember to register for the event before 3 December at this link. There are some interesting prizes to be won!
