The Hulks Smash Into Bugis Junction - She-Hulk Light Projection Show
Capitaland has been spreading the festive cheer with Disney-themed installations called “From Our Family To Yours” at their 16 malls around Red Dot Island. Besides the workshops, events and shopping deals, there are decor consisting of characters from Disney, Star wars, Marvel and Pixar.
Bugis Junction is host to the Hulks from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The Hulk in rage mode stands guard in between two Christmas trees. From 26 November to 4 December 2022, the mall had a fun, kooky light projection show to promote the Disney+ series, SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW.
Jennifer Walters (the wonderful Tatiana Maslany) is Bruce Banner aka The Hulk's (Mark Ruffalo) cousin. Due to an accident, she absorbed Hulk's radioactive blood and acquired similar super-powered strength, you know, the green kind. Unfortunately, Jennifer loves being an attorney, so, she tries valiantly to balance her SHE-HULK persona with her more normal, human desires - like getting a suitable date.
Red Dot Diva enjoyed the light-hearted take of SHE-HULK'S life experiences, even as the writers navigate relevant feminist issues like misogyny and exploitation of women. Jennifer Walters feels real. She is “angry inside all the time” when she deals with society's expectations about womanhood every single day. At the same time, she battles inwardly about her self-worth. By virtue of the numerous ranty Youtube videos denouncing the series - almost all by male content creators - Red Dot Diva knows that the show's observations from a woman's point of view are spot on. Why so outraged when it does not hit a raw nerve, right?
Jennifer Walters breaks the fourth wall constantly in the show. While Red Dot Diva is not a fan of this concept, she felt that it works in SHE-HULK. Firstly, this is expected because it part of who SHE-HULK is. Secondly, as the main storyteller, Jennifer refers to many inside gags and jokes which are so meta (there is the one about the number of cameos appearing on the show), that it is genuinely funny. Also, by having SHE-HULK addressing the audience directly, the series creators gets extra points for paying homage to John Byrne’s run of the iconic comic book series The Sensational She-Hulk.
Talking about cameos, SHE-HULK manages to bring a couple of fan favourites back on screen. There is Sorcerer Supreme Wong (Benedict Wong) and the oh-so-handsome Charlie Cox-version of Daredevil. Mmmmm... The series also introduces us to one of the most memorable and hilarious characters to the MCU - party girl “with one Y and two N's, but it's not where you think” Madisynn King (Patty Guggenheim). Madisynn manages to build a tight bond with Wong over booze and the Sopranos, and the rest is history.
If you have missed the light projection show, you can check it out in my YouTube video below. (Please subscribe to the channel too!)
Gotta admit, the CGI rendered in SHE-HULK looks jonky a lot of the time. However, it does not detract too much from the exciting action sequences. Or, perhaps, it is because Tatiana's delivery as Jennifer/ She-Hulk is so charming and so charismatic, that Red Dot Diva overlooks how weird the CGI appears on screen. In fact, she might want to binge on the series again, just to have another dose of feel-good woman power, and to check out those Daredevil scenes one more time.
All 9 episodes of SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW is currently available for streaming at Disney+ SG.
