Indie Animation Festival Called Cartoons Underground Returns 21 October 2017

Cartoons Underground, South-East Asia's largest indie animation festival, returns for its 6th edition this Saturday, 21 October 2017 at Kult Kafe.

The festival attracted the attention of film makers from over 50 countries, totalling over 400 film submissions. This year, 13 specially curated films will be featured including "Poles Apart" by Singaporean Low Ser En and directed by Paloma Baeza.

"Poles Apart", a story about a polar bear and grizzly bear with voices by Helena Bonham-Carter and Joseph May, will make its Asian premiere at Cartoons Underground. The short film won the McLaren Award for Best British Animation at the Edinburgh International Film Festival. (Watch the trailer here.)

The other films, which range from the sombre to the whimsical, include "The Third Script" by NTU graduate Javad Khajavi, "My World" by Miyako Makio from LASALLE College of the Arts, "My Father's Room" by Nari Jang and "Merlot" by Giulia Martinelli and Marta Gennari. The festival's night session's opening film will be Zagreb Animafest 2017 Grand Prix winner "Nighthawk", directed by Spela Cadez. This year, to emphasize Red Dot Island's prominence as a hotspot for the region's animation world, the festival will be launching The Golden Durian Awards. The awards aim to celebrate the best works of Singaporean film that have spiked the level of imagination for viewers and industry folks. The awards will go to Best Film, Best Director and the 'People's Choice'.

The first two awards will be decided by judges - Chris Shaw, head of the Puttnam School of Film & Animation at LASALLE College of the Arts, Marchand Jooste, Lead Animator at Industrial Light and Magic, Singapore, and award-winning local film makers Henry and Harry Zhuang.

As for the 'People's Choice' for best film, attendees at the festival will have a say on the matter on the night itself.

Don't miss attending the festival if you want to get to know the region's animation community and want to feast your eyes on animation films that are edgy and innovative.
