STGCC 2014: A Much-Needed Catch-up with Guest, Comic Artist Harvey Tolibao!

After a two-year hiatus from attending STGCC, Filipino comic artist Harvey Tolibao will be back on the island this year, with a few homies from the HMT Studios.

Harvey used to visit the Red Dot Island from time to time for book store appearances. The animated and talkative artist would usually spend time chatting and drawing (not just quick sketching, mind you!) insanely detailed art for fans that would always bring huge smiles on their faces. He was one of those people who gave a lot of heart together with a piece of his art, no matter where he was or how much time he had. When he was a guest at STGCC 2010 and 2011, Harvey would be the last guest to close his booth and leave the showfloor!

During his absence from the island's local comics scene, Harvey has kept himself very busy back in the Philippines. He started HMT Studios in 2011, got married and has a lively two-year-old son. He has also worked on several projects, like Marvel's "Silver Surfer" series and DC's "New Guardians" Green Lantern as well as with Zenescope and Valiant. Currently, he is drawing a short arc of "X-Men" Vol. 4 for Marvel, starting from issue #18 to #22. The female-centric story written by Marc Guggenheim has received mostly positive reviews so far.

The Glam Bloggers' Alliance took the chance to catch up with Harvey about what else he has been up to and his aspirations for the future:

STGCC 2014: Who Else Will Be At The Pop-Culture Convention of the Year?

After the announcement of 12 guests for this year's STGCC, there were some MORE who will be here at the pop-culture convention of the year at MBS' Convention Centre on 6-7 September.

One of them is well-known toy designer Scott TollesonScott Tolleson had already been teasing his fans on Twitter and Instagram with pics of his reveals in the Red Dot Island, including the adorable Kookie No Good. The news of his guest appearance was finally confirmed with an official press release from Reed/ STGCC recently. WOOHOOO! Another of his exclusives is Bella Lee, who will be showing her killer curves at the Pobber booth at #AA76 and #AA78.

Just look at the fortune cookie pout!

Do check out the Spotlight on Scott Tolleson written by Ed of Toys-etc from the Glam Bloggers' Alliance!

STGCC 2014: More Hot Guests Means More Hunky Biceps for Diva!

Just as fans were about to calm down from squealing after fan favourite Humberto Ramos was announced as one of STGCC 2014's guests, organizer Reed Exhibitions pumps up the adrenaline by adding 12 more names on the guest roll!

Returning to our shores will be one of Red Dot Diva's most favourite, most awesomely-bicepstuous artist and New Times Best-Selling writer - David Mack.

At last year's STGCC, David's booth was so hot it was radiating like red Kryptonite. Fans stood by for several minutes, just to admire at him drawing "live", and he sold off most of his books and art prints. Red Dot Diva would know - she was helping him out at his booth. (Read her experience here.)

Together with Eisner-Award artist Cameron Stewart, the two will be representing part of the team of "Fight Club 2" - a 10-issue graphic novel series just announced last week at San Diego Comic-Con "Fight Club 2" continues the story of the popular 1999 movie by Chuck Palahniuk which starred Brad Pitt and Edward Norton. David Mack will be cover artist for "Fight Club 2", while Cameron Stewart will pull his weight doing the story's artwork.

Vinyl+Splash Report - Filipino Geeks and Artists Fight Against Hunger

Red Dot Diva doubts that any of the guests who were at last Saturday's inaugural Filipino pop culture and art event Vinyl+Splash are actually "starving artists" (they do seem very successful in their own right after all!). But, one thing's for sure, they were united in their fight against hunger in the Philippines.

Through the series of events held at Fullybooked Bonifacio High Street Gates, Vinyl+Splash contributed a sizeable donation of 125,000 Pesos to the United Nations' World Food Programme! Country director of the UN World Food Programme Stephen Anderson, was on hand to receive the pledge from Jaime Daez Managing Director of Fullbooked, and mentioned how overwhelming it was to see the event bring the charity to reality.

Red Dot Diva says that this not-to-be-missed convention boasts of a series of exciting events like live art sessions, auctions, trading blocks, raffles (and who doesn't like prizes, right?) and an art jam. Harvey Tolibao Event: Geeks Assemble At Planerds

That pesky Merlion sure has a drooly hold on comics artist Harvey Tolibao. It has been two weeks since STGCC 2011 closed its doors and he *still* has not left the Red Dot Island yet!

In fact, Harvey had landed himself in the NRD Prime Forcefield last Sunday afternoon, and was trapped there for a few hours doing signings and limited sketches for fans.

The event, held at Harris Planerds - the mecca for geeks right in the heart of Orchard Road - became a convenient venue for comics fans to assemble. Laid out in front of Harvey's table were colourful comics that contained his artwork, and fans could buy his pretty art prints of Avengers and Supergirl, as well as his limited edition sketchbook titled "Viscosity".

Diva's Choice Targets At STGCC 2011

Different folks have different strokes.

And Red Dot Diva knows it is simply not possible to please everybody.

Hence, Red Dot Diva credits the organizers and exhibitors of STGCC for making a valiant attempt to offer a range of "hot specials" for the mixed bunch of local and regional fans who will be attending the convention next weekend.

Red Dot Diva will be stirring up her own of recipe of desirable strokes during STGCC weekend. Here's a list of what she will be aiming for (in no particular order):

Harvey Tolibao and Stephen Segovia Contributes To GnB Comics' Charity Auction

Even though it has been several months since the devastating earthquake and tsunami hit Japan earlier this year, Red Dot Diva reminds everyone there is still more to be done for the people who are in need there.

GnB comics, a main local stronghold of Western comics geek-culture, held a charity drive previously with 50% of sales proceeds going as donations to the Red Cross. (Read the earlier blog article here.)

They are continuing the charitable efforts with help from Marvel comic artists Harvey Tolibao and Stephen Segovia, who have both generously donated their original artworks for a special auction.

Harvey has decided to donate his intriguing version of Green Lantern and Stephen has offered his cover to the variant of Vampirella issue #5.

DC Comics Leaps Into STGCC 2011 With A Few Surprises!

The Red Dot Island may be small. And our conventions may be very much niche-based and less crazy than those held in the USA.

The locally-hosted conventions like ComiFest and Anime Festival Asia tend to serve the sizeable anime and manga crowd here and around the region instead of running a more generic pop-culture program.

Still, with a continued focus on a mix of East and West, Red Dot Diva thinks that the Singapore Toy, Games and Comic Convention (STGCC) 2011 has managed to get some pretty cool "Western-comics" guests this year.

Being so far-flung from most Westernized pop-culture hubs, she is always grateful when those who hail from USA, Canada or UK are willing to travel such long distances to our Red Dot Island, just to meet their Asian fans. That shows *a lot* of heart.

For one thing, it seems that DC Comics will be back at STGCC 2011 in a bigger way than before! DC has been a strong supporter of STGCC in the past years and last year, happy fans got to meet Gail Simone and Ivan Brandon.

Harvey Tolibao vs Wendy Chew: Clash of the Psylockes

It was a night of When Harvey Met Wendy.

Marvel artist Harvey Tolibao had decided to extend his stay in Red Dot Island yet again. And on his last night here, he met up with some local comic geeks for a casual dinner at a rowdy pasta diner.

Local chibi/ sketch artist Wendy Chew aka Mashi was invited along so that she could get some tips from an artist who has had his work published and distributed internationally. Red Dot Diva reported that, as usual, there was much chat about comics and art.

And everyone was commenting on how Harvey was *always* drawing, regardless of where he was at. He also started drawing at the dinner table while the group was waiting for dinner to be served!

Harvey Tolibao and The Merlion - Part 2

Curious about Harvey Tolibao's thoughts on the Merlion variant cover that he drew for STGCC 2011? Watch the Part 1 video for his honest views!

Many fans were excited to find out that Harvey will be releasing a special sketch book during STGCC. Count that as one more reason to come to the convention - to meet cheery and personable Harvey in person at the Marvel booth!

Harvey Tolibao And The Merlion - Part 1

Talented comic artist and fan favourite Harvey Tolibao, who is known for his swift sketching skills, seems to becoming one of Red Dot Island's frequent visitors.

Red Dot Diva was surprised to find that Harvey was a guest at last Friday night's dinner at Iluma. She thought it was coincidental that his visit came so soon after the announcement of the Merlion-istic STGCC-only comic variant for "Captain America #1" (by Ed Brubaker and Steve McNiven). After all, Harvey was the artist for the variant cover!

Hot Stuff and Marvel-lous Guests At STGCC 2011

Things may actually get hot and drool-y at this year's STGCC in August 2011.

Red Dot Diva is already contemplating to wear a pair of sparkly wellingtons in case the hall gets flooded with drool whenever one of the key guests named Kipi appears.

Kipi who? She is an insanely popular international cosplay star, with super-kawaii looks set to make fanboys squee. (Trust Red Dot Diva. They do squee. Albeit in a different register.) Check out her blog and get a mental picture.

Kipi will be having meet the fans sessions and will also be a judge for the Cosplay@STGCC competition. So there will be a chance for fans to interact with her during STGCC.

And if Kipi is not one's cup of tea, there are still the Marvel comic folks who will be making their way to Singapore! YESSSS!!

A Sunday Afternoon with Harvey Tolibao

Red Dot Island sure has its special draw for Filipino artist Harvey Tolibao - who currently draws for Marvel Comics. After all, he stayed on the island for another 3 weeks subsequent to the STGCC wrap-up!!

Those who might not have known better may have supposed it could be the wide range of yummy local food which lured Harvey for a longer stay. It could also have been the super-warm reception he gets from his loving fans here. But Red Dot Diva confirms that there were also other more personal reasons. *wink wink*

One thing for certain, Harvey did not keep his hands idle while he was on the Red Dot Island. He kept himself busy and did a talk at the National Library on 22 December. Then, there was another round of signings and sketchings at Absolute Comics on 30 December.

And if that wasn't enough, Harvey ended his 'why is he still here? stay' on Red Dot Island with a free-of-charge art exhibition at Ink Singapore, Wilkie Edge on 1 and 2 Jan 2011. A great way to celebrate a New Year weekend, Red Dot Diva could indeed testify.
