Gamestart Asia 2018: Elise Zhang Professes Her Love for Disney Movies, Overwatch Fans, and Durians!

With over 40 million players worldwide, Blizzard's RPG first-shooter game Overwatch remains an international smash-hit even 2 years after its release. One of most favourite game characters is Mei, the adorkable Chinese climatologist with (literally!) very cool abilities.

Shanghai-based voice actor Elise Zhang, is as adorable as her alter ego. She is here in Red Dot Island as a guest at South-East Asia's premiere gaming convention, Gamestart Asia 2018.

At the interview session with a small group of eager press folks, the perky voice actor would twirl her long hair, and she would make animated hand expressions as she spoke about Mei, her involvement with Overwatch and the ardent fanbase. Her positive energy was infectious. It was like seeing Mei alive in 3D, but without the Endothermic Blaster, of course.

Red Dot Diva: How did you start working on voice acting, and how did you get the role of Mei in Overwatch?
Elise: I studied chemical technology in college and I got my Masters degree in that. I didn't learn how to act or voice act. I was obsessed about voice acting since I was 12 or 13 years old, so when I was in college, I searched for some training courses on that. I took the course and my mentor thought I had some potential and gave me a lot of opportunities. So, after I got my Masters degree in chemical technology, I became a voice actor.

For Overwatch, that's all about audition. My company works with Blizzard a lot - World of Warcraft and Heart of Stone and Heroes of Storm - and I've been in all of those games. So, they said to me - we need a voice actor who can speak English and Mandarin, and you have a Masters degree, you must know how to speak English, so come to the audition. There were 5 or 6 girls at the audition, and I got the part!

I am so lucky, because Blizzard made a character just like. If they made a different kind of girl character, I might not have gotten it.

2018 Show Dates for STGCC and Gamestart Asia Announced

Two local conventions, The Singapore Toy Game and Comics Convention (STGCC) and Gamestart Asia, have locked in their 2018 show dates several months early this time round.

In early December 2017, STGCC announced that the 11th edition of the "East meets West" pop-culture convention will be held on 8 - 9 September 2018. Amongst the sea of anime/ manga/ cosplay conventions held in Red Dot Island throughout the ye ar, STGCC is the largest show that has a higher focus on Westernized properties, with high-profile guests who have worked with DC Comics, Marvel, IDW, Image and more.

Last year, with Star Wars as one of Red Dot Island's tourism initiatives made with Disney, the show also drew in props and set reconstructions by the Belgian Costume Division vzw, and guests from Disney and Lucasfilm.

There was also a section called the Good Game Experience or GGXP, which offered gaming enthusiasts their own base to duke it out in tournaments and try out new games. It had been a long time since the "G" alphabet of STGCC was given a fair share of representation.

Gamestart Asia 2017: Strictly Reserved for the Hardcore Gamers and E-sports Enthusiasts

Gamestart Asia, South-East Asia's largest gaming convention, kicks off today at Suntec Convention Centre.

At 8:45AM, there was already a small group of gamers lining up to be amongst the first to enter the hall. After all, the first 300 people get a random loot bag filled with goodies.

Red Dot Diva and Ed, her good friend from the Glam Blogger Alliance got to enter the hall for a quick media preview, just before the VIPs were allowed in.

Upon entering the show hall, one cannot miss the trippily lighted main stage looming in front of you. It looks pretty grand, and was a very nice Instagram moment right there.
